Head-on collision kills Kentucky woman

A head-on collision between a car and a semi-truck left one woman dead in Magoffin County on July 14. The woman was a passenger in the car that collided with the truck.

According to the Kentucky State Police, at about 11 a.m., the driver of the car involved in the accident lost control while headed west on Mountain Parkway. The man then reportedly crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a semitrailer that was traveling east. He seems to have lost control while trying to maneuver a steep right curve, according to officials.

The passenger in the car, a Pikeville woman, was declared dead at the scene of the car accident. The driver suffered serious injuries in the collision and was transported to Paul B. Medical Center for treatment; he was later taken to Pikeville Medical Center. The semitrailer driver received medical attention at the scene of the accident.

It is unclear why the driver of the car lost control while trying to maneuver the right turn. It is important to determine what factors might have played a role in the incident. Some of the factors might have been beyond the driver's control, such as weather or road conditions. However, there are other factors that might also have played a role, such as distracted driving, driving under the influence or speeding, which might be used to show negligence on the part of the driver of the car.

In a case like this, liability would first have to be established before the injured victim or the family of the decedent can file a personal injury claim. Once liability is established, however, an injured victim or the family of a decedent, can choose to file. If a successful personal injury claim is filed, they might receive compensation for damages such as hospital treatment costs, pain and suffering, and lost wages.
