Kentucky fire department volunteer dies in truck accident

A volunteer firefighter and nephew to the chief of the Glendale volunteer fire department died on Aug. 6 after responding to an accident on Interstate 65. The 25-year-old man and his mother were reportedly getting equipment from a fire truck when a tractor-trailer struck the firefighters and the emergency vehicle.

The Glendale fire department has about 20 volunteers; some were responding to the reports of a vehicle fire on the highway near Glendale at around 3:30 a.m. The chief stated that they were trying to take care of the emergency and their people when the tractor-trailer collision happened. The woman was transported to a hospital and was said to be in serious condition as of Aug. 9.

Other area fire departments will cover for the Glendale department while the volunteers mourn their loss. The last fatality of the department happened in 1970 when a volunteer was electrocuted. No charges have been filed in this accident yet, and authorities are still investigating the crash.

Large semi-trucks can easily cause serious damage, and those injured in a truck accident may be able to recover damages related to medical expenses and lost wages when hurt due to another's negligence on the road. When truck accidents happen, those potentially liable may include the trucking company, driver or vehicle manufacturer in some instances. Negligence could have occurred if a driver was distracted or reckless, a truck did not receive routine maintenance or a truck part was defective. An individual injured in such an accident may want to speak with an attorney.
