Injuries and fatalities involving large trucks on the rise

Every year, large trucks in Kentucky and across the country are involved in hundreds of thousands of collisions. Data gathered from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that in 2012, large trucks were involved in 333,000 collisions. Over 3,900 people died in those collisions, and 88 fatal truck accidents occurred in Kentucky alone.

In 2012, the number of fatalities from collisions involving large trucks showed a 4 percent increase from 2011. In most of these cases, the victims were occupants of other vehicles, while truck drivers accounted for 18 percent of fatal crash victims.

Also in 2012, large truck accidents injured over 100,000 people, an 18 percent increase from 2011. Occupants of other vehicles were injured over 70 percent of the time in these truck accidents, while truck drivers were injured 24 percent of the time. Large trucks accounted for only 4 percent of all registered vehicles on the road in 2012, but they were two to three times more likely to be involved in fatal collisions than passenger vehicles.

From improper loading to poorly trained truck drivers, there are several possible causes for large truck accidents, and multiple parties, including the truck driver and his or her employer, may be at fault following a collision. When accidents occur, the trucking company and its insurance company may try to gather as much evidence as possible to deny or limit their liability.

When someone is injured or killed in a truck accident, the victim or the victim's family may wish to have a lawyer on their side who can thoroughly examine accident reports, medical records and trucking logbooks in order to possibly reconstruct the accident and find evidence of negligence on the part of the truck driver and trucking company.
