Fatalities and injuries involving pedestrians

Motor vehicle accidents in Kentucky and around the country that involved pedestrians accounted for 4,743 fatalities in 2012, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The number of deaths were reduced by 3.2 percent, according to the NHTSA, between 2001 and 2012.

Pedestrian injuries in 2012 caused by motor vehicle accidents account for roughly 12 percent of the most common injuries which totaled 76,000, according to a national survey. A 2.5 percent reduction in the number of pedestrian injuries in accidents involving a motor vehicle between 2001 and 2012 was also seen.

Statistics show that of all fatal pedestrian crash accidents, 33 percent occur in the evening between the hours of 8 p.m. and midnight, and most occur in cities as opposed to rural areas. In 2012, pedestrians killed had an average age of 46 while the age of those suffering injuries was 35. Seniors account for 20 percent of fatalities and 9 percent of injuries. Close to 90 percent occur in clear weather as compared to inclement conditions. Location plays a role since 70 percent of all pedestrian accidents occur at non-intersections as opposed to intersections.

Pedestrians have low visibility and little physical protection. Drivers are obligated to use caution and be alert for them. Pedestrians who are injured due to a driver's careless actions may be faced with medical bills, lost wages and other costs associated with their injuries. An personal injury attorney may help by evaluating accident data and witness accounts as well as police records to determine if the motor vehicle driver is at fault. The attorney may use this to file a lawsuit to recover appropriate damages.
