Dangerous driving increases crash risk in Kentucky

According to the Auto Insurance Center, overcorrecting by drivers is the most common cause of a fatal motor vehicle accident in Kentucky. Other common causes of fatal car accidents in other states include the failure to stay in the proper lane or failure to drive on the right side of the road. Data was collected from The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatal Accident Reporting System between 2009 and 2013 to make such a determination.

Researchers discovered that all states had at least one common risk factor that caused the majority of accidents in that state. Furthermore, it was determined that many crashes occurred in more rural areas where they may not be as many police officers available to enforce traffic laws. There were more fatal crashes involving drunk drivers in rural areas that lacked public transportation.

Overall, North and South Dakota were among the top five states for most fatal crashes involving drunk drivers per 100,000 residents. Montana and Wyoming were also on that list. Research also determined that in most states, more accidents occurred on roadways covered in rain compared to roadways covered in snow. However, in southern states, fog or crosswinds were more likely to contribute to an accident compared to snow or sleet on the roads.

Those who have been involved in motor vehicle accidents caused by an impaired or otherwise negligent driver may wish to talk toan attorney to determine if there is any legal recourse available. The attorney can often examine the results of the accident investigation report as well as use other evidence such as eyewitness accounts to establish negligence in a personal injury lawsuit filed against the responsible party.
