Drunk driving accident kills 1 in Kentucky

In a perfect world, there would be no drunk drivers. Or at least, we would be able to detect who is driving under the influence and give their vehicles a wide berth on the road.

This is not a perfect world, of course, and we cannot control how safe our surroundings are much of the time. Sober drivers cannot always avoid drunk drivers, especially while on the highway, when things can go from seemingly safe to deadly in the blink of an eye.

In a sad example, one driver was killed and another was arrested on June 7 following a car accident on a Kentucky highway. Authorities believe the suspect was impaired, based in part on his allegedly out-of-control driving just before the crash.

The collision took place on Highway 60 in Henderson. Police say that the suspect and the victim were travelling in opposite directions when the suspect’s car veered onto the victim’s side of the road. His car T-boned the victim’s vehicle, killing her. She was 54.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of DUI, driving with a suspended license and aggravated offense. It is not uncommon for someone who is driving drunk to behave recklessly, putting not just themselves at risk of serious injury, but the public as well.

Someone who gets hurt while drunk driving may have no one to blame but him- or herself. But his or her victims may be able to hold the drunk driver to account. Criminal charges are a matter for law enforcement. Individuals who are harmed in a car accident have the right to seek compensation from the person responsible.
