Kentucky firefighter charged with DUI in hit-and-run crash

A hit-and-run accident in Lexington left one person with serious injuries, authorities stated. The Sept. 19 incident reportedly occurred around 11:03 p.m. in front of a bar on Euclid Avenue.

A Ford Expedition was traveling at a high speed when it backed over a curb in front of the bar and proceeded to crash into the bar's facade, according to Lexington police. The SUV then hit a man who was sitting at a table in front of the bar, police allege. The driver of the SUV fled the scene of the crash without stopping, purportedly.

The man struck by the SUV suffered severe injuries, according to authorities. Moreover, a passenger in the SUV suffered minor injuries after attempting to exit the moving vehicle. Reportedly, the passenger is an employee of the Fayette County Sheriff's Office.

Officials located the vehicle in front of a house on Yellowstone Parkway, police said. The vehicle belongs to a man, a 36-year-old firefighter, who is facing charges of driving under the influence after police took him into custody. Police booked him into Fayette County Detention Center. According to authorities, the investigation into the incident is ongoing and additional charges are pending.

Pedestrian accidents often result in serious if not fatal injuries and typically warrant an exhaustive investigation. In the event that investigators were to conclude that a driver's careless actions were responsible for a pedestrian accident, the at-fault party might face not merely criminal charges but also civil action. For, accident victims may seek compensation for losses related to the accident by filing a personal injury claim. If successful, victims might be awarded restitution for hospital bills, medical expenses and even lost wages in the event that their injuries prevented them from going to work.
