Transportation Safety Concerns in America

Kentucky drivers may be interested in learning that, on January 13, 2016, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) held its ninety-fifth Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting. The meeting focused on the development of transportation safety technology. At this meeting the NTSB announced a 'Most Wanted List" for 2016 of safety issues to focus its efforts upon.

Topics concerning increasing safety on US roadways included how to reduce the number of car crashes caused by fatigued drivers, how to implement collision-avoidance technology to increase driver safety, and methods to reduce the deadly distractions faced by drivers. The NTSB president and CEO stated in a press release that cars are safer and smarter these days but that 35,000 lives are still lost each year to car crashes. She also stated that the Most Wanted List's purpose is that of a roadmap designed to guide us toward zero deaths on the road.

The 2016 Most Wanted List built upon the 2015 list, adding topics focusing on railroad safety, such as how to improve rail road safety oversite and other safety initiatives. Among these initiatives were the implementation of positive train control and how to make rail tank cars safer. Returning from 2015's list of topics were how to prevent the loss of control in general aviation flights, how to enforce medical fitness for duty requirements, and how to end substance impairment in the transportation industry.

Regardless of the efforts of the NTSB, accidents are still likely to happen. When someone has been injured in a car crash due to someone else's negligence, they may be able to file a personal injury claim to collect on damages related to the accident.
