Head-on crash in Kentucky kills motorcyclist

Police in Kentucky have reported that a motorcyclist was killed after being struck head-on by a pickup truck during the early evening hours of April 19. The 61-year-old man had been riding with a group of friends at the time of the accident. The pickup truck driver and another motorcyclist suffered injuries in the crash, which took place in Lexington on Old Richmond Road at approximately 7:30 p.m.

A Lexington Police department representative said that the cause of the accident was still under investigation, but alcohol consumption and drug use do not seem to have been a factor. However, investigators were unable to say why the southbound pickup truck crossed the center line and entered the path of oncoming traffic in the vicinity of Grimes Mill Road. The pickup truck struck two of the five motorcycles that had been riding northbound in formation on Old Richmond Road.

Responding emergency workers say that one of the motorcycles was on fire when they arrived at the site of the accident, and its rider was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. The Fayette County coroner said that the Nicholasville man died of multiple blunt force trauma. The injuries suffered by the pickup truck driver and the second motorcyclist struck were described as minor. The accident caused Old Richmond Road to be closed for several hours as accident reconstruction experts went about their work.

While the cause of this accident may not have been immediately clear to investigators, collisions of this type are often the result of distracted or drowsy driving. Negligent behavior of this type frequently leads to catastrophic head-on collisions, and personal injury attorneys may file wrongful death lawsuits on behalf of the surviving family members of those killed. They often face financial hardship and crippling bills during a time of grief, and the litigation filed on their behalf could seek compensation for burial costs as well as loss of support.
