Pedestrian safety to avoid accidents

A Kentucky pedestrian who is involved in a traffic accident is much more likely to suffer a serious injury or to be killed than are people who are inside of motor vehicles. Pedestrians simply do not have the same protections that motor vehicle occupants have.

While motorists should be alert and careful around pedestrians, pedestrians should also follow some simple steps so that they can reduce the chance they will be struck by a vehicle. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, people should remember to try to only cross a road at a marked crosswalk. If one is not available, they should walk to the nearest intersection to cross instead of trying to do so in the middle of a street.

At night, the CDC recommends that people wear reflective clothing and carry a flashlight with them to increase their visibility. While walking alongside a road, people should try to stay on a sidewalk or at last on a shoulder if a sidewalk is not present. It is also best to refrain from texting or talking on a cellphone or listening to music on headphones while walking.

Statistics show that male pedestrians are more likely to be hit by a vehicle than females. Federal statistics show that in 2103, more than one-third of pedestrians who were fatally injured had a blood alcohol content higher than the legal limit imposed on motorists.

A pedestrian accident may be especially catastrophic. In many cases, people who are struck by cars are left with permanent and disabling injuries. When such an accident happens because a motorist was negligent, the injured victim may want to have the assistance of an attorney in seeking compensation through a personal injury lawsuit.
