Coalition aims to save lives on the road

For many drivers in Kentucky, the dangers presented by car and truck accidents are a real daily threat. In fact, over 100 people are killed each day on American roadways while many more are seriously injured. In 2016, 37,461 people lost their lives in traffic accidents. This represented an increase of 5.6 percent over the previous year and a reversal of a prior trend showing a decrease in deaths. A group called the Road to Zero Coalition is working to advocate for increased traffic safety and the elimination of deaths on America’s roadways

The association includes 675 members in the transportation industry, government agencies and other relevant institutions. Its membership includes trucking companies and suppliers, which is particularly important as truck accidents can be dangerous and deadly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 4,317 people died in 2016 in accidents that involved large trucks, including 722 truck drivers or passengers. These large trucks are massive on the road, and 80 percent of the trucks involved in fatal accidents weighed 26,000 pounds. The coalition is focusing on successful efforts, like seat belt promotion, as well as the creation of new technology.

While coalition spokespeople brushed aside the immediate relevance of automated vehicle technology, they emphasized the importance of automated safety technologies that improve a human driver’s knowledge of and response to danger. They also noted the importance of access to emergency medicine and trauma centers as a quick first response can save lives after devastating accidents.

People who have survived truck accidents can suffer long-lasting, life-changing injuries and disabilities as a result. When people have been injured by a truck through no fault of their own, they can consult with a personal injury lawyer. An attorney can help them fight to receive the compensation they deserve for their medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
