Study: vehicle accidents the 8th leading cause of death worldwide

Most residents in Kentucky and across the United State are aware of major worldwide health threats like HIV/AIDS and obesity. However, many overlook one of the major causes of injury and death across the world: vehicle accidents. Now, a new study shows that vehicle accidents are becoming a leading cause of death worldwide.

According to a study by the World Health Organization (WHO), traffic deaths have become the eighth most common cause of death globally. In recent years, traffic deaths have surpassed deaths caused by HIV/AIDS as well as tuberculosis. In 2016, traffic-related deaths reached their all-time high of 1.35 million. Traffic deaths are also now the No. 1 cause of death for those aged 5 through 29.

However, the report isn’t all bad news. In many countries, traffic legislation is reversing the growing rate of roadway deaths. However, these changes are coming up short in WHO’s effort to halve road traffic deaths by 2020. The report also reflects that while the number of deaths is rising, fatalities relative to the population have stabilized. Overall, the number of deaths per 100,000 has been approximately 18 for the past 15 years. When you take into account population growth, the WHO’s efforts seem to be working. Unfortunately for some, it may not be working fast enough. Traffic deaths have the largest impact in poorer countries, the study shows.

Despite the efforts of WHO, vehicle accidents continue to injure and kill drivers every day. If a driver is hurt in a traffic accident caused by another person, the at-fault party could be considered liable. An attorney with experience in personal injury law may be able to help a victim recover damages through legal action.
