What are the complications of whiplash?

Whiplash is one of the most common injuries that car accident victims develop. According to MayoClinic, whiplash occurs due to the rapid back-and-forth jolting of the neck. Think of the movement like cracking a whip.

While whiplash can be mild, it can also result in serious complications

What are the symptoms of whiplash?

Whiplash symptoms do not always develop directly following the accident. They can take hours or days to show up. Some of the common symptoms include:

  • Neck pain
  • Pain that worsens with movement
  • Headaches
  • Shoulder pain and tenderness
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness

In addition to the more common symptoms, some people also complain of ringing in the ears, blurred vision and trouble sleeping. You may also find yourself unable to focus or concentrate on difficult tasks. Regardless of the type of neck pain you experience, you should visit a doctor at any sign of whiplash.

What are the complications of whiplash?

While many people begin to feel better within a few weeks, this is not the case for all that suffer from whiplash. Whiplash pain can last for months and years following the injury. While you cannot always predict the course of your injury, you have a higher likelihood of suffering complications if the pain becomes severe and spreads to your arms or seriously limits your range of motion. If you happen to be an older person or have a low back injury, you may be more likely to develop complications from whiplash.

Chronic whiplash includes pain that does not go away after a few weeks or months. It is most likely to occur after a high-speed accident.
